Sunday Bloody Sunday was the third single from U2’s 1983 album, War – the album that introduced the band to a worldwide audience.  The song, which has a militaristic rhythm, refers to the events of January 30, 1972 in Derry, Northern Ireland.  On that Sunday, 26 civil rights workers were shot by British soldiers during a Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association march.  Thirteen were killed, including six minors.  Witnesses to the event claimed that all of the protesters were unarmed, but an initial investigation cleared the soldiers of any wrongdoing.  A new investigation was mounted by British authorities in 1998 on the grounds that the initial investigation was a “whitewash,” but it has yet to render a conclusion.

This event inspired the title of the now-famous song by what is arguably Ireland’s most successful rock band.  The band has said that the song speaks out against violence and sectarianism in general.  The message, they argue, is “How long do we have to put up with this?”  To date the band has continued to make the song a staple of their live performances.  Get the Sunday Bloody Sunday ringtone, and check out these other U2 ringtones: Beautiful Day, One, Vertigo, Where the Streets Have No Name, Window in the Skies, With or Without You, Grace, October, She Moves in Mysterious Ways, Bullet the Blue Sky, and more!
